How to Take Your Tax Complaint to the Next Level

If you think that you were not correctly advised on your tax affairs or a relating tax investigation and HMRC refuses to accept, this makes the matters worse. Will this be the end of your tax investigation? And are you liable completely for the wrongdoing? Are there any steps for you to pursue justice?

Keeping your tax affairs in good order is your obligation and HMRC is waiting to pounce on anyone who fails to do so. Yet when he gets things wrong he’s often reluctant to admit there’s a problem or accept responsibility for it. If you believe you have a valid complaint that can’t be resolved with your tax office, who will help you in this regard?

The Adjudicator’s Office (AO) was set up to provide an independent free-to-use complaints procedure. Although HMRC provides the AO’s resources, including personnel, all decisions are made by and personally signed off by the Adjudicator who is independent and not on HMRC’s payroll. But it is important to note that AO will consider your complaint only if you have tried to resolve the matter through the two internal procedures offered by the HMRC
